Delta Society Instruction for Pet Partners

Info on Delta Society:

Delta Society was established in 1977 creating a powerful network for pet owners, volunteers, people in health care, administrators, and scientists who believe a person or community is not healthy without nurturing contact with animals and nature. Delta Society is committed to educational and community service programs to make this belief a reality.

The Delta Pet Partners Program was established in 1990 to provide a mechanism to ensure that "both ends of the leash", people as well as animals, were well-prepared to participate in Animal Assisted Activity/Animal Assisted Therapy programs. Pet Partners is the only national registry that requires volunteer training and screening of animal/handler teams.

Delta’s mission is to improve human health through service and therapy animals by:

  • Expanding public awareness of the positive effects animals can have on human health and development;

  • Removing barriers that prevent the involvement of animals in everyday life; and

  • Expanding the therapeutic role of animals in human health, service and education.

Delta Society’s Pet Partners Program is the only national registry that requires volunteer training and screening of animal/handler teams; and the only national program that has established evaluation criteria for a variety of animals, including rabbits, cats, guinea pigs and birds.

Pet Partners registration requires the animal/handler team to demonstrate appropriate skills and aptitude. All teams must demonstrate skills that include appropriate public behavior/social skills and an aptitude for working with and enjoying strangers.

Animals involved in Animal Assisted Activities and Animal Assisted Therapy programs will encounter situations that will require restraint, forgiveness, and a tolerance for unpredictable human behavior. Handlers must recognize that they and their pet must be able to handle unexpected situations, as accidents can happen at any time.

The Pet Partners evaluation and training provides a way for the handler to better understand their animal teammate’s needs and the needs of the people they visit.

What makes a team appropriate? The handler must possess the skills and knowledge required to visit people and facilities. It is critical that handlers have an interest in people and enjoy visiting, even in noisy, crowded environments. The handler must also have good control of and communication with the animal. Handlers should demonstrate the following behaviors:

  1. Are reliable

  2. Are confident and natural in their interactions with people and animals

  3. Have control of their animal

  4. Inspire confidence in the person she/he is interacting with

  5. Actively engage in interactions with people and accept and forgive differences in people’s reactions and behavior.

In the Pet Partners Team Training Course you will learn to visit safely with your animal in hospitals, nursing homes, classrooms, and other facilities. Successful completion of this course, in an instructor led or home study format, is required for registration as a Pet Partner.

Topics include:

  • selecting and preparing animals for visits

  • identifying and decreasing stress in animals

  • animal health and safety

  • special needs of client groups

  • interacting with special people

  • facility health and safety codes and

  • patient confidentiality.

Delta-licensed Instructor led classes allow you to be around other pets to test reactions, and hospital equipment is used for appropriate training for hospitals; nursing homes; and children and men are part of the test to gauge reactions and learn visiting skills.

A practice course is provided to simulate the evaluation course used for certification. Call me or email me for more information or to sign up.
